What a walk-in shower is, and when it makes sense.

A walk-in shower replaces a tub, a fiberglass stall or a tired tiled shower with a fully tiled enclosure sized to the room.

The term covers three jobs. A tub-to-shower conversion puts the shower in the tub's 60-inch alcove. A shower rebuild replaces an existing stall or tiled shower in its own footprint, usually because the pan leaks or the tile is dated. And in a primary suite the shower often grows, taking space from a closet, a jetted tub or a wall, and gets a bench and a second head.

It makes sense when the shower is the fixture you use every day and the tub is not, when a fiberglass unit has yellowed or cracked, or when you see grout that is always dark at the bottom of the wall, which usually means the pan behind it has already failed.

The floor decides the rest: a low curb is the standard; a curbless entry needs the floor recessed and a linear drain.

Choices we walk through at the visit

Curb or curbless, and where the glass goes so the spray stays in.
Point drain with a mosaic or pebble floor, or a linear drain with large-format tile that slopes one way.
A built-in bench or a corner seat, and one or two recessed niches where the studs allow.
Rain head, hand shower, body sprays: the valve and the drain have to be sized for what you pick.
Tile format and pattern: large-format porcelain, subway, herringbone, slab-look panels.

How we build a walk-in shower.

Every one of the 200-plus bathrooms we have remodeled got the same sequence.

Demolition to the studs and a look at what is there: the subfloor, the drain line, the vent, any rot or mold.
Plumbing rough-in by the plumber we schedule: the new valve, the drain where the slope wants it, the inspection.
KERDI-BOARD or cement board on the walls, a pan sloped a quarter inch per foot, Schluter KERDI membrane over floor and walls, continuous across every corner, the bench and the niche.
Water test before tile. Then tile in Schluter ALL-SET: back-buttered large-format pieces, lippage clips, joints no tighter than the tile allows, silicone at every change of plane.
Grout that needs no sealer, a fan vented outdoors, and glass measured after the tile is grouted.

Walk-in shower questions.

What is the difference between a walk-in shower and a curbless shower?

A walk-in shower is any tiled shower you step into rather than a tub. Most have a low curb. A curbless shower has no curb at all, which takes floor work and a linear drain. See our curbless shower page.

Can I have a bench and a niche?

Yes. A bench is framed and waterproofed as part of the pan, so it has to be decided before the membrane goes on. A niche goes between the studs where there is no pipe or vent; two are common, one for the bottles and one at hand height.

My old shower leaks. Can you just retile it?

No, and we would not want to. If water is getting behind the tile, the pan or the membrane has failed and new tile over it will fail the same way. The fix is a rebuild from the studs with a new Schluter pan. It costs more than retiling and it is the last time you will pay for it.

Do you install the glass?

Yes, as the last step, after the tile has cured. Sliding, pivot and fixed panels; see shower glass and doors.

Is the price labor only?

Yes, and we say it three times on purpose: every range here is labor only. You buy all materials, including the setting materials most people assume come with the job, such as the Schluter membrane and drain, cement board, ALL-SET mortar and grout. We give you a product list with quantities before the start date, and we walk you through the choices at the store if you want.

Do I need a permit?

Usually yes when the work touches plumbing, electrical or framing, which most shower projects do. We file the application with your town under the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code and schedule the inspections. A like-for-like cosmetic swap may not need one, and we tell you which case you are in at the visit.

How long does it take?

It depends on scope and on when your materials arrive. You get the schedule in writing before we start. We seal off the work area, protect the path in and out, and clean up at the end of each day.
