Tub to Shower Conversion in NJ
The tub nobody uses comes out and a tiled walk-in shower goes in, in the same 60-inch spot. Same footprint, new everything behind the wall. Built by our own crews on the Schluter system, priced in writing after one visit.
What a tub-to-shower conversion is, and when it makes sense.
The most common bathroom project we do in New Jersey, and the one with the best payoff per dollar.
Most hall baths in North Jersey have a 60-by-30 or 60-by-32 alcove tub with a shower head over it. A conversion removes the tub and its surround down to the studs, checks the drain and supply lines, moves the drain from the tub position to the center or a linear drain along the back, and builds a tiled shower pan and walls in the same alcove. Then glass: a sliding door, a pivot door or a fixed panel.
It makes sense when nobody has taken a bath in years, when stepping over the tub wall is getting harder, or when the tub surround is failing and you would be opening the wall anyway. It is the right move for a hall bath that will stay a hall bath.
One thing to weigh: if it is the only tub in the house, some buyers want one. We tell you that at the visit and let you decide. In a house with a second tub, or a primary suite getting one, the conversion is an easy call.
What is included
- Tub, surround, valve and old drain out; walls opened to the studs and checked for rot or old galvanized lines.
- New shower valve rough-in and drain relocation by the plumber we schedule; new blocking for the niche, the door and grab bars.
- Schluter pan, membrane and drain, water-tested before tile, then tile on walls, floor and niche.
- Bathroom fan, GFCI and lighting brought to current code when the town requires it.
- Glass door or fixed panel installed after the tile is grouted and cured.
How we convert a tub to a shower.
Same sequence every time, with a water test before the tile.
- Demolition to the studs, floor and stairs protected on the way out. Cast-iron tubs come out in pieces.
- The plumber sets the new valve and moves the drain (a tub drain sits at one end; a shower drain sits where the floor slopes to it).
- KERDI-BOARD or cement board on the walls, a sloped pan, Schluter KERDI membrane over floor and walls to full tile height, KERDI-DRAIN or KERDI-LINE bonded to the membrane.
- Water test. Then tile in Schluter ALL-SET, a recessed niche, a bench or corner seat if the room allows, tight consistent joints, silicone at the corners.
- Grout that does not need sealing, a new fan vented outside (never into the attic), and the glass measured after the tile.
