Homes across Essex County.
Essex County's suburbs grew in layers. The railroad came first, and towns like Montclair, Millburn and Maplewood filled with houses from the late 1800s to the 1930s. Later, the land farther west filled in after World War II, and Livingston grew fastest in those years.
For bathrooms, that means two common starting points. Older homes bring plaster walls, cast-iron drains and small upstairs baths. Postwar homes bring original tile set in a thick mortar bed, and layouts that are sound but tired.
Across the county, the permit process works the same way: bathroom work that changes plumbing, electrical or framing is permitted under the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code through the town's construction or building office, with plumbing and electrical inspections.
