What shower glass is, and which kind fits which shower.

The glass does two jobs: it keeps the spray in and it decides how open the room looks. The shower layout decides which type you need.

A fixed panel is a single sheet of glass with no door, held by a channel or clips at the wall and the floor. It is the choice for curbless and walk-in showers wide enough that the spray does not reach the opening, and it is the cleanest look there is. A frameless pivot door swings on hinges mounted to the tile or to a fixed panel; it needs clear floor space to swing and, by code, must be able to open outward. A sliding door runs on a bar or a track across a 48- or 60-inch opening and needs no swing room, which is why it is the answer for most tub-to-shower conversions. A semi-frameless or framed door is the same idea with a metal frame, at a lower price.

Glass makes sense on every walk-in shower we build. A curtain on a tiled shower undoes half of what the tile does for the room, and it lets water onto the floor.

One rule: the glass is measured after the tile is grouted, never from the drawings. Tile walls are never perfectly plumb, and a custom frameless panel is cut to the wall it will live on.

What to decide

Fixed panel, pivot, sliding or bi-fold, based on the opening and the swing room.
Frameless (3/8-inch glass, clips and a header or none), semi-frameless, or framed.
Finish: matte black, brushed gold, brushed nickel or chrome, matched to the faucet and the grab bars.
Clear, low-iron (no green tint), frosted or reeded glass.
A protective coating on the glass, which cuts down on water spots.
Where the door handle and the towel bar go, and whether the door can open out.

How we handle the glass.

Glass is part of the shower scope, not an afterthought, and the blocking for it goes in before the tile.

At the visit we set the shower layout with the glass in mind: where the panel lands, which way the door swings, and where the header or the clips will anchor.
Solid blocking goes into the wall for every clip, hinge and header before the KERDI board and the membrane, so the hardware screws into wood, not into tile over air.
Tile is set and grouted and cured. Then the opening is measured for the glass, including the out-of-plumb of the walls.
Standard sliding and pivot doors from the product list are installed by our crew. Custom frameless panels are templated and installed by the glass shop we schedule, so the cut matches your walls.
KERDI-FIX or silicone where the glass meets the tile, on the outside only, so the inside edge can drain.

Shower glass questions.

Frameless or framed?

Frameless is thicker glass with almost no metal, and it is what you see in every photo on this site. It costs more for the glass and needs solid blocking behind the tile. Semi-frameless and framed doors cost less and are the sensible choice for a hall bath on a budget.

Can a shower door open inward?

A hinged door has to be able to swing out, so someone who slips can be reached. Most frameless doors swing both ways. Where there is no swing room, a sliding door is the answer.

Why do you measure the glass after the tile?

Because tile walls are never perfectly plumb, and a custom panel is cut to the wall it lands on. Measuring from the plans is how you get a door that does not close.

Do you install the glass yourselves?

Standard sliding and pivot doors, yes, as the last step of the shower. Custom frameless panels are templated and installed by a glass fabricator we schedule, because the glass is cut to a template of your walls. Either way it is part of one written scope.

How do I keep the glass clean?

A squeegee after each shower and a coating on the glass, which most fabricators offer. Hard water in North Jersey leaves spots on untreated glass in a few months.

Is the price labor only?

Yes, and we say it three times on purpose: every range here is labor only. You buy all materials, including the setting materials most people assume come with the job, such as the Schluter membrane and drain, cement board, ALL-SET mortar and grout. We give you a product list with quantities before the start date, and we walk you through the choices at the store if you want.
