The borough split from Westfield Township in 1895 and then waited sixty years for its houses.

Mountainside had 2,046 residents in 1950, 6,325 in 1960 and 7,520 in 1970 (U.S. Census). It has held near that number ever since. Almost every house dates from that window, and the styles follow: ranches and split-levels first, colonials on the later streets, on lots that back up to the Watchung Reservation, the largest nature reserve in Union County.

Those homes were built well, with mortar-bed tile and copper plumbing, and a surprising number have never had the bathroom gutted. What has worn out is the layout: a single hall bath for the whole upper level and a primary bath with a stall shower measuring 32 inches square.

Do I need a permit for a bathroom remodel in Mountainside?

Yes when plumbing, electrical or framing changes. We file with the Borough of Mountainside Building Department at Borough Hall on Route 22 under the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code, and we schedule the inspections. Issuance time is the borough's, not ours.

My ranch is on a slab. Can the shower still be curbless?

Sometimes. On a slab the drain cannot move far without cutting concrete, so we usually keep it where it is and build the shower around it. A low threshold is always possible; a true zero threshold depends on the slab and is priced after we see it.

What does a tub-to-shower conversion cost here?

For labor, $6,500 to $16,750. A same-spot conversion with standard tile and a sliding door sits toward the lower half; a bench, niche, linear drain and full-height tile push it up. You buy the materials from our list.

Can you make the bathroom safer without it looking like one?

Yes. Blocking in the walls, a bench, a hand shower and a low threshold are built in; grab bars come in the same finish as the faucet and go on when you want them.

How long does a hall bath take?

It depends on the scope and on when your materials arrive. The schedule is in writing before we start, including the days the shower is unavailable.
