The mid-century township.

Incorporated in 1809 as New Providence Township and renamed in 1951, Berkeley Heights got its shape in the twenty years after the transistor was first demonstrated down the road.

The township had 954 residents in 1920 and 8,721 in 1960 (U.S. Census). Neighborhoods like Countryside filled in from the 1930s to the 1960s with colonials, capes, ranches and expanded ranches; Spring Ridge followed in the 1960s and 70s with colonials and split-levels. Older pockets exist too, including Free Acres, the 67-acre single-tax community founded in 1910, and the farmsteads near the Deserted Village of Feltville in the Watchung Reservation.

A 1960s Berkeley Heights bathroom is usually a five-by-eight hall bath with a tub, a vanity and a window, plus a small primary bath with a stall shower barely big enough to turn around in. Both are structurally fine and functionally tired.
