New Providence became its own borough in 1899, but it stayed small until the Murray Hill research labs next door turned it into a commuter town.
The Census counted 3,380 people in 1950, 10,243 in 1960 and 13,796 in 1970. About 84 percent of the borough's homes were built before 1969, and more than half date from the 1940s through the 1960s. Streets in Pine Way Farms, Tall Oaks and the Murray Hill section are lined with split-levels, capes and ranches from that era, with larger colonials and newer-traditional houses mixed in where lots were rebuilt.
The oldest layer is small but real: the Presbyterian Church has stood since 1737 and the Salt Box Museum is an 18th-century farmhouse. In the houses we remodel, though, the story is almost always mid-century.
A 1960s split-level bath is typically a hall bath on the upper level and a half bath or a cramped primary next to it. The tile is set in mortar, the fixtures are original or one generation newer, and the fan is the loudest thing in the house.

- Mortar-bed tile is heavy to remove and we protect the split-level stairs on every trip.
