Union County was formed in 1857. Many of its suburbs grew along the commuter lines: Summit on the Morris and Essex line, Westfield and Cranford on what is now the Raritan Valley Line. Their older neighborhoods date from the late 1800s through the 1930s, and postwar building filled in the rest.
The Rahway River runs through several towns, and Hurricane Irene in 2011 brought its highest recorded flood. In the lower-lying areas, that is worth remembering when planning a bathroom on a lower level.
