The railroad arrived in 1838 and turned Madison into a commuter suburb. Its greenhouses grew roses for New York florists, and by 1889 it was known as the Rose City.
Walkable neighborhoods grew up around the town center and the station from the 1800s on, while great estates spread out from the core around the turn of the 20th century. Later, land that had been farmed or used for rose greenhouses became house lots for single-family homes.
That history leaves Madison with older houses close to Main Street and the train, and newer homes on former greenhouse and estate land farther out. The first usually have small bathrooms with plaster walls. The second usually have more room and a bathroom that has never been touched.
