Morris County changed fast after World War II. Its population more than tripled between 1920 and 1970, with a jump of close to half in the 1960s alone, as GI Bill mortgages helped returning veterans buy homes and farms turned into neighborhoods.
The older railroad towns in the east, like Madison, Chatham Borough and Morristown, have houses from the 1800s and early 1900s. Much of the rest grew after the war, and today the county also has plenty of newer subdivisions and townhouse communities.
Bathroom work that changes plumbing, electrical or framing is permitted under the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code through each town's construction office. In a few places the arrangement is shared: Chatham Borough's building permits, for example, are processed by Madison.
