Bathrooms in Short Hills and Millburn homes.

Millburn grew around the Morris and Essex railroad. Short Hills, inside the township, was planned from 1874 by Stewart Hartshorn as a commuter village.

The railroad turned Millburn from a farming area into a Victorian residential community in the 1800s. Hartshorn laid out Short Hills on about 1,500 acres, and the Short Hills Park Historic District still holds houses built between 1870 and 1928 in the Shingle, Queen Anne and Stick styles.

Around those streets, the township filled in over the following century, and today many lots carry a newer or much-enlarged house. So a bathroom here can be 120 years old, 20 years old, or somewhere in between, and each one opens differently.

What most owners have in common is the goal: a primary bath that feels like the rest of the house, and guest baths that hold up to real use.

Can you install a curbless shower on the second floor?

Often, yes. It depends on the joists and on how the floor can be recessed or built up. We check at the visit before we promise it.
