Millburn was a paper-mill village before it was a suburb. The railroad arrived in 1835, the township was chartered in 1857, and the houses came in waves after that.
Roughly two thirds of the township's houses were built in 1939 or earlier, an unusually large prewar share for New Jersey. Around the downtown that means Victorians and foursquares on the older blocks and Tudors and colonials from the 1920s beyond them. The Wyoming section, laid out as its own suburb along the Maplewood line, is recognized in the township's historic preservation plan for its early-twentieth-century streetscape. South Mountain climbs toward the reservation, with houses from the same decades and a few later rebuilds on the steeper lots.
The Paper Mill Playhouse, opened in 1938 inside an 1870s mill, is the reminder of what paid for the first houses. The bathrooms in those houses were small, tiled over mortar, and served by cast-iron stacks that are now a century old.
Some Millburn homes have been expanded two or three times. In those, we spend the visit working out which era each bathroom belongs to, because that decides what is behind the tile.
