How Verona was built.
Settled in 1702 and incorporated as a borough in 1907, Verona did most of its growing in a forty-year stretch that shaped nearly every street.
Census counts tell the story: 3,039 residents in 1920, 7,161 in 1930, 10,921 in 1950 and a peak of 15,067 in 1970. The Olmsted Brothers plan for Verona Park was approved in 1922, right as the first big wave of houses went up around the lake. The result is a township of Cape Cods, Craftsman-influenced Colonials and Tudors, with postwar ranches and split-levels on the later streets.
A 1930s Verona bathroom is usually a five-by-seven room with a tub under a window, a wall-hung sink and a medicine cabinet. A 1950s one adds pastel tile and a built-in vanity.
