What large-format tile is, and when it makes sense.

The industry defines large-format tile as any piece with a side longer than 15 inches. That one number changes how it has to be installed.

Large-format porcelain is what most of our clients want in a shower today: marble-look 24-by-48s on the walls, 12-by-24 planks on the floor, a slab-look panel behind the vanity. It reads as one surface, it has a fraction of the grout lines of subway tile, and it is easy to keep clean.

It makes sense on straight, plumb walls and on floors that can be made flat. It also makes sense where you want the calm look: a primary suite, a curbless shower with a linear drain, a feature wall. It makes less sense in a tiny powder room where every piece gets cut, or on an old floor that would need heavy leveling first.

The trade-off is unforgiving: a large tile shows every high spot in the wall behind it. Flatness, mortar coverage and lippage control are what you are paying for, and they are the things a low bid skips.

The numbers we work to

Substrate flat to 1/8 inch in 10 feet and 1/16 inch in 2 feet for large-format tile (ANSI A108.02), versus 1/4 inch in 10 feet for small tile.
Mortar coverage of 95 percent or more in showers and wet areas, checked by lifting tiles as we go (ANSI A108.5).
Lippage held to 1/32 inch at joints under a quarter inch (ANSI A108.02).
Running-bond offsets no more than 33 percent on tiles over 15 inches, because long tiles bow slightly from the kiln.
Grout joints never tighter than 1/16 inch and at least three times the tile's size variation.

How we install large-format tile.

Two installers, a flat wall and the right mortar. Every step is there because skipping it shows.

Straightedge the walls and floor first. Shim or float the framing, and use self-leveling underlayment on floors, so the surface meets the large-format flatness tolerance before any tile.
In showers, Schluter KERDI-BOARD or cement board with KERDI membrane over it; on wood-framed floors, Schluter DITRA uncoupling membrane so the floor can move without cracking the tile.
Schluter ALL-SET, which is approved for large-format tile and is the mortar the Schluter warranty asks for. Troweled on the substrate and back-buttered on the tile, so there are no hollow spots.
Lippage-control clips at every joint, a 33 percent offset or a stack pattern, and a layout that keeps full tiles where you look and cuts where you do not.
MAPEI Ultracolor Plus FA grout, one product for joints from 1/16 to 3/4 inch that needs no sealer, plus silicone at every corner and change of plane.

Large-format tile questions.

Why do large tiles cost more to install than small ones?

Because the wall or floor has to be flatter, the mortar has to be a medium-bed type applied to both surfaces, every joint gets a leveling clip, and it takes two people to set a 24-by-48 without breaking it. The tile itself is often cheaper per square foot than mosaic; the labor is not.

Can you put large-format tile on a shower floor?

Yes, with a linear drain, so the floor slopes in one direction and the tile does not have to bend around a center drain. With a point drain the floor needs smaller tile or a mosaic. Large-format on a floor should be at least 5 millimeters thick; thin wall panels are not rated for floors.

Do you install porcelain slab panels?

We install large-format porcelain up to the common 24-by-48 and 32-by-32 sizes as part of our bathroom work. Full-size gauged porcelain panels (more than a square meter each) are a separate trade with their own tools and training, and we tell you at the visit whether your project calls for it.

Will the grout lines be tight?

As tight as the tile allows. Rectified porcelain lets us go to 1/16 inch; unrectified tile needs a wider joint or it shows the size variation. We never go tighter than the standard or the manufacturer allows, because that is where cracks start.

Do I need to seal the grout?

Not the grout we use. MAPEI Ultracolor Plus FA is a high-performance grout whose data sheet says no sealer is required. Natural stone tile is different: the stone itself gets sealed.

Is the price labor only?

Yes, and we say it three times on purpose: every range here is labor only. You buy all materials, including the setting materials most people assume come with the job, such as the Schluter membrane and drain, cement board, ALL-SET mortar and grout. We give you a product list with quantities before the start date, and we walk you through the choices at the store if you want.
