Knowing how to prepare for a home addition means treating it as a structural, zoning, and logistics project first. The kitchen, primary suite, or family room comes later. In New Jersey, especially in established towns such as Millburn, Summit, Livingston, Montclair, and Chatham, the house itself often carries 50 to 100 years of construction decisions that need to be understood before new work begins.

Start With the Reason for the Addition

Prepare the Household for an Active Job Site

Even a well-managed addition changes how you use your home. There will be delivery trucks, daily parking needs, temporary barriers, noise, dust, shutdowns, and periods when part of the house is inaccessible. Decide in advance whether you will remain in the home, move out for specific phases, or arrange temporary accommodations only during major demolition and tie-in work.

If you stay, establish a protected living zone with a clear path to bedrooms, bathrooms, and the kitchen. Discuss dust containment, exterior access for crews, working hours, pet safety, and where materials can be stored. Moving furniture out of affected rooms before demolition is far simpler than shifting it around a contained work area later.
